Nowadays Enschede is known as the urban heart of the eastern part of the Netherlands, with no less than 160,000 residents. With over 85 nationalities present at the University of Twente, we provide education for over 12,000 students from all over the world. About 33% of the student population is international. Our Twente Educational Model is a unique concept, fully fitted for the needs of today's students.
At the University of Twente, we are pioneers in combining technology, science and engineering with social sciences to impact the world around us. Our driving force as students, scientists and educators is a deep sense of connection with people who share a curious, entrepreneurial spirit. All of our research and education is aimed at making a difference in today’s society, while setting up the next generation for the future. How can we contribute to the development of a digital, fair, and sustainable society between now and 2030? In this pursuit, the entrepreneurial mindset and global awareness of our many talented scientists, educators and students lead us to move beyond differences, disciplines, borders. The cross-disciplinary way of working that characterizes our university opens up unexpected possibilities - especially in combination with creativity and excellence in scientific disciplines. Our distinctive educational model, engineering approach and open culture generate new ideas, new energy, new ways forward. Our strength lies in the collaboration between the various disciplines. In the research institutes the University of Twente connects technology (high tech) to human behaviour and social relevance (human touch).
DesignLab is a platform for transdisciplinary collaboration and creativity, focusing on education and research in design research. DesignLab realizes creative and transdisciplinary connections between science and society through its Responsible Futuring approach. DesignLab contributes to tackling societal challenges and problems by translating scientific and technological developments into these issues in an innovative way. When developing solutions and products, the impact on society is always central.
The university is involved in several initiatives aiming to connect university with societal partners. UT’s ecosystem partners are EnschedeLab which provides a setting to connect the municipality of Enschede with students from the four educational institutes of the region the University of Twente, Saxion Hogeschool, ROC van Twente and AKI/ArtEZ to collaborate across the boundaries of their institution on innovative solutions that help the city move forward. Additional partners are the City of Enschede as one of the UT’s key public partners in local research and innovation projects and a challenge provider of multiple challenges of the ECIU University and the Design Lab.
